I feel sad and sorry for you to still use a 2.4 kernel (and no, 
PowerTOP will not be useful at all); you're missing out on a whole lot 
of good stuff ...

But yes, PowerTOP should not crash, so I'll fix it to make sure it 
doesn't.... (probably not quite in the way you did; it should just be 
more robust, independent of the actual kernel version)
