Known issue/fix: xf86-video-ati does not (always?) disable
backlight.

The current opensource radeon driver may not disable the backlight on
your radeon-enabled laptop, when the display goes to DPMS suspend/off.
If it does or not may depend on the model/make of laptop. I can't tell.

Using radeontool as a "triggerable" tool together with your favorite
screensaver may save you quite some power. YMMV.
radeontool from the commandline will tell you if backlight is on or off.
