It's highly dependent on the motherboard used. It's one reason why I
avoid BIOSTAR motherboards on the desktop -- they have a seriously
broken APIC/LAPIC setup that requires disabling the ACPI setup just to
run any modern Linux kernel.
Let us know what make/model of that laptop that has the broken LAPIC setup.
