Watt's Up Pro power analyzer
Dell Inspiron 6400 running Fedora Core 6 and Gnome Desktop

I noticed that the current spiked when I locked my screen or the
screensaver ticked on as I had the 'floating Fedora bubbles'
screensaver.

Upon further analysis, some sizable values were observed which
suggest that the 'blank' screen is the best, and if animation is
required (and it's probably not) your best bet is the 'floating
feet' option:

fedora core 6 gnome screensavers

values are 'added over running system mA' w/ 118.1V wall power...

blank 		 = 0 mA
floating bubbles = 20 mA
cosmos  	 = 0 mA w/ spikes up 20 mA up to 93 mA on picture load
floating feet	 = 7-10 mA
pop art squares	 = 26 mA
pictures folder  = untested, suspect similar to cosmos
